Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said that rivers must be saved to save the country. Pollution is increasing in the rivers flowing by the capital due to industrial effluents. So also informed about setting up treatment plants at different places. He said these things at the meeting held today Monday (December 04) in the cabinet room in the capital to present the survey report of the master plan to protect the navigability of the rivers around Dhaka and to prevent pollution and the policy decision to take the related project.

Sheikh Hasina said, after Awami League came to power, the aim of this government was to protect the river and maintain its navigability and protect it from pollution. During the government’s first term, river dredging began and the alluvium was used for land reclamation. Rivers should be dredging and navigability should also be maintained. To prevent erosion and river dredging should also be done.

He also said that the wastes of the industries and factories which are being built along the river are usually being dumped in the river. All the waste from the sewage line also discharges into the river, increasing the pollution. The stench coming from the Buriganga river due to pollution is very painful. Whatever we do, we must first consider waste management.
Sheikh Hasina informed about the decision to set up small treatment plants in different places of Dhaka city to save the rivers around the capital.

He said, in the name of river governance, building embankments on once fertile cropland was a normal phenomenon. But the depth of a river must be considered, and we must create a buffer zone along the river; So that rain water can be stored during monsoon.

Emphasizing on the concerted efforts of all concerned authorities for any development plan, keeping in mind the preservation of the environment, he said,

Since coming to power, I have asked everyone to make plans for all cities. Whatever plan we adopt, waste management and water flow must be maintained properly. Plan accordingly.

Sheikh Hasina also said that it is very sad that the country’s development programs were not planned in the past. This did not happen during Pakistan and even after 1975 the illegitimate grabbers of state power, who came in armed violation of the constitution, did not focus on overall coordinated and planned development of the country. As a result environmental issues are neglected and rivers are encroached upon.
