A large part of the Awami League is working for Ziaul Haque Molla (eagle symbol), an independent candidate for the Bogra-4 (Kahalu and Nandigram) seat in the 12th National Assembly elections and expelled from the BNP. Even though BNP did not participate in the elections, many leaders and workers of the party have entered the field in the election campaign on his behalf. AKM Rezaul Karim Tansen (Boat) candidate of Jasd is in trouble in this situation.

Ziaul Haque Mollah is a former executive member of the Central Committee of BNP. He was elected Member of Parliament three times from the party. Awami League first nominated Kahalu Upazila Awami League President Helal Uddin Kabiraj for this seat. Later, when the seat was divided, Awami League gave the seat to Jasdar’s candidate AKM Rezaul Karim. Rezaul is fighting with a boat instead of party symbol torch. However, they said that the leaders and workers of Awami League of Kahalu and Nandigram upazilas are not with this boat.

Ziaul Haque Molla said, “Awami League, BNP, Jasad are all with the eagle.” Many people of Awami League and BNP are working to win me openly, many people are working internally. I am getting enough support from the administration.

On Wednesday, at least 20 voters of Kahalu Upazila constituency said that most of the leaders and activists of BNP, except some responsible leaders, have entered the field in favor of Ziaul Haque Molla. Because of this, 14 leaders of two upazilas have already been expelled from BNP. Besides, a large part of Kahalu and Nandigram Awami League supported Ziaul internally. Even the leaders and workers of Awami League will move to the field to attract voters to the center on his behalf. Several leaders of Nandigram Municipal Awami League have also been expelled from the party for working for the boat of Jasdar candidate AKM Rezaul Karim.

General Secretary of Nandigram Upazila Awami League Anisur Rahman said that many leaders and workers of Awami League have suffered various deprivations of Rezaul Karim. The leaders and workers never got respect from him, nor did they appreciate any work. However, Awami League is running its own boat campaign.

At least 12 voters, on condition of anonymity, claimed that there was a secret agreement between the government and Ziaul Haque Molla. For this reason, Awami League leaders and workers have turned to eagles instead of boats. The administration is also giving him extra benefits compared to others.
In this regard, AKM Rezaul Karim told Prothom Alo that a government organization is working to win an independent candidate with the eagle symbol – trying to mislead the voters by spreading such false propaganda. It’s a strategy for voters. Voting will be very transparent and acceptable. Attempts to mislead the voters by running these propagandas will not succeed.

Regarding Awami League leaders working against the boat, AKM Rezaul Karim said, “At first, the party gave the boat to the president of Kahalu Upazila Awami League. Later boats from 14 teams were given to me. There will be pride in the Awami League camp. One or two can go against the boat separately. However, the grassroots workers and supporters of Awami League are with me.
Helal Uddin Kabiraj told Prothom Alo that Rezaul Karim was a member of Parliament for two terms. But the Awami League leaders and workers did not do any work without the ‘commission’. Although he was a candidate for boat, he did not have any contact with party leaders and workers of Awami League.

According to party and local sources, Ziaul Haque Molla’s father Azizul Haque Molla was joint secretary general of BNP. In 1979 and 1991 elections he was elected Member of Parliament from Bogra-4 Constituency. When he died in 1993, Ziaul Haque Mollah won the BNP nomination in the by-election. He was also elected Member of Parliament in 1996 and 2001 elections. Later became a member of the National Executive Committee. When the army-backed caretaker government came to power in 2007, Ziaul Haque Molla demanded reforms in the party under the leadership of the then Secretary General of BNP, Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan. After that, he was known as a ‘reformist’ in BNP. In the 2008 election, BNP nominated Mustafa Ali, excluding him. He was in the draft list of party nominations for the 2018 elections. But eventually Mosharraf Hossain was nominated instead of him.

According to the voters, a large section of the party is angry because former BNP member of parliament Ziaul Haque Mollah is an independent candidate. 14 leaders and workers of BNP and allied organizations have been expelled from the party for participating in the election campaign for Ziaul Haque. Among them are two UP chairmen.
