Two independent candidates supported by former Gazipur City Corporation Mayor Jahangir Alam lost in the 12th National Assembly elections. They are independent candidate of Gazipur-1 constituency Rezaul Karim Russell and Kazi Alim Uddin of Gazipur-2 constituency. However, independent candidate of Gazipur-5 seat, former chairman of Zilla Parishad Akhtaruzzaman won by getting more than 15 thousand votes.

When talking about this, Jahangir Alam told Prothom Alo, “I didn’t lose, they lost (Boat candidates from Gazipur-1 seat A.M. Mozammel Haque and Zahid Ahsan Russell from Gazipur-2 seat won). They have weakened Awami League. The two ministers should have understood that the people of Awami League cast 2 lakh votes against them. In the 2018 elections, ACM Mozammel got almost 4 lakh votes. He got 1 lakh votes this year. Then 3 lakh votes of Awami League have gone away from him. Zahid Ahsan Russel got a quarter of 5 lakh votes. This time 3 lakh votes have passed. That means, the vote of the Awami League minister has gone away from the Awami League. The local leaders and workers of the Awami League said that the Gazipur City Corporation election was held on May 25 last year. Jahangir Alam became the mayoral candidate in that election. The election commission canceled his nomination papers due to defaulted loans. As the nomination was not returned even after appealing, he entered the election field with his mother Zayda Khatun. Awami League permanently expelled him for disobeying the party’s decision in the election field. Even after canceling his nomination, losing his party identity, Jahangir Alam took a firm stand in the election field with his mother. Jahangir Alam’s mother Zayeda Khatun won by defeating Awami League candidate Azmat Ulla Khan.

Earlier, Jahangir Alam had to lose his party post due to a controversial statement about Bangabandhu. He was temporarily suspended from the post of mayor. Jahangir Alam has claimed at different times that Minister of Liberation War Affairs AKM Mozammel Haque and Minister of State for Youth and Sports Zahid Ahsan Russell were behind his dismissal. For this reason, instead of being a candidate in the parliamentary elections, he supported independent candidate Rezaul Karim Russell of Gazipur-1 seat, Kazi Alim Uddin of Gazipur-2 seat and Akhtaruzzaman of independent candidate of Gazipur-5 seat. Since the allotment of symbols on December 18, he campaigned extensively for these three candidates.

Analyzing the results of the election, it has been seen that the ruling Awami League has won four out of five seats in Gazipur. An independent candidate won by defeating a boat candidate in one seat. According to the private results, in Gazipur-1 constituency, AKM Mozammel Haque got 1 lakh 9 thousand 218 votes and his nearest rival Rezaul Karim Russel got 92 thousand 788 votes.

Jahangir Alam claimed, “I was in favor of the candidates for four seats. There two candidates lost, but two others won. I was also in favor of Simin Hossain Rimi (Gazipur-4). Only Rezaul and Alim Uddin are losing. Votes are decreasing after becoming a minister, it means that they did not give good governance to the area, did not evaluate the leaders. After being in power, how do the votes decrease? To prove this, I have supported independents in the polls.

When asked whether he might be under pressure for the position he took in the election, Jahangir Alam said, ‘They have harmed me before and will do so in the future. I don’t care. Awami League has been doing it. I do Awami League even in difficult times.
