BNP leader MA Qayyum detained in Malaysia

BNP leader MA Qayyum has been arrested in Malaysia. He was detained by the police on Friday afternoon under the Immigration Act due to his illegal stay and taken to the local Ampang police station.

MA Qayyum’s family members and human rights activists told Prothom Alo this Saturday evening.

Qayyum’s relatives say that since 2015, he has been staying in Malaysia as a ‘second home’. In addition to this, he is staying in Malaysia as a refugee listed by the United Nations refugee agency UNHCR.

Shamim Ara Begum, wife of MA Qayyum from Kuala Lumpur, told Prothom Alo over the phone that Qayyum was parking the car after returning home after Friday prayers. At that time a police team came and asked him to go to the police station. The police told him he was being detained under immigration law for being illegally present. Because his passport has been cancelled. Later he was arrested and taken to the police station. At that time, the police were also informed that he was staying in Malaysia with a UNHCR refugee card.
