Illegal storage of paddy and rice, 9 companies fined in 3 days in Naogaon

In the last 3 days, 9 companies have been fined Tk 540,000 for illegally storing paddy and rice in Naogaon. The mobile court fined all those institutions in the anti-hoarding operation in Niamatpur, Manda and Mahadevpur of the district from last Tuesday to today Thursday.

This afternoon, the mobile court raided three warehouses in Manda Upazila and found evidence of illegal rice stockpiling of 1,000 metric tons. The owners of those three houses were fined 2 lakh 10 thousand taka. Manda Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) and Executive Magistrate Laila Anjumand Banu conducted the mobile court.

According to district administration sources, 100 tons of illegal rice stock is found in Kalitala market area of Manda upazila in a paddy store named Taramon Traders than the indicated capacity. The mobile court fined Tk 50,000 to the owner of that warehouse, Siddiqur Rahman, for storing it for six months. Owner Abdul Quddus was fined Tk 80,000 for illegally storing 200 metric tons of paddy in the warehouse of Sheikh Traders in the same area. Apart from this, the court fined the owner of the company Tk 1 lakh for illegally storing 700 metric tons of paddy in a company called Haji Traders. Instructions have been given to sell the stocked paddy in the market within four working days.

Earlier on Tuesday and Wednesday in Niamatpur and Mahadevpur anti-hoarding operations, the concerned traveling court fined 7 companies a total of Tk 3 lakh and 10 thousand for illegally storing paddy and rice.

District Commissioner Md. Golam Mawla told Prothom Alo that the price of rice is suddenly increasing for a few days. There were allegations that several mill owners and traders were raising the price of rice by illegally storing paddy and rice. For this, raids are being conducted in warehouses of rice and paddy. He said that various institutions are being fined under section 19(1) of the Agricultural Marketing Act, 2008 for stocking more paddy and rice than the prescribed capacity. Apart from this, the warehouses of the traders who are trading in paddy and rice without registration are being sealed.
