Fatiya Begum, a housewife of College Road area of Lakshmipur municipality, sits outside the house to cook. Cooking utensils are scattered around. Fateya was blowing on the stove with blinking eyes. After trying for about two minutes, the fire ignited. Then he started cooking. This is his daily work. If you don’t cook in a clay oven, everyone in the family of five will have to go without food.

Fatiya Begum lamented, “Two months ago, the stove used to burn like candles during the day. Even if there was no gas during the day, gas was available from 11 pm to 5 am the next morning. I used to wake up at night and work hard at home. But for a month I am not getting proper gas at any time of day and night. Can’t afford to cook with electric stove or cylinder gas.
Due to the acute gas crisis, the customers have suffered in the entire district of Lakshmipur. Bakhrabad gas customers are unable to cook without getting gas. Desperate, many cook with clay stoves, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders and electric stoves.

Aggrieved consumers say that the cooking stove is not lit during the day due to gas crisis. Little gas is available from late night till dawn. However, the gas of this time is not very useful. Many are now using LPG cylinders along with line gas. This has increased the cost. Low income people are suffering.

Ahsan Kabir, a resident of North Tehmuni in the city, told Prothom Alo that they both work as husband and wife. There is no time to cook at night after coming home from work. You have to cook all day in the morning. It is not possible now as the gas pressure drops in the morning. Having to buy food from restaurants outside.

Salma Begum of South Tehmuni area said, “Gas crisis is getting more severe day by day. I never get gas in the stove day and night. Forced to cook sometimes in a gas cylinder, sometimes in a clay oven.

According to Bakhrabad Gas Laxmipur office sources, they have 7 thousand 500 residential connections in Laxmipur. Of these there are 50 to 60 commercial connections. Lakshmipur has only 2000 cubic meters of supply against the total demand of 8000 cubic meters.

Laxmipur Bakhrabad Gas Distribution Company Manager Zahidul Islam said that gas supply is not available as per demand for a month. The gas pressure in the pipeline has decreased. Customers are complaining regularly. But they are unable to provide any solution.
