In Manikganj’s Paturia, another truck was rescued after the ferry Rajnigandha sank with 9 cargo vehicles. The truck was rescued from the river by the salvage ship Hamza and brought to the pontoon of the 2nd ghat of Paturia. With this, three trucks and a pickup van that sank along with the ferry were recovered in the last five days.

However, Humayun Kabir (45), the second engine master of the ferry who went missing in this accident, is yet to be found. In addition, the ferry was not recovered.

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) Aricha Office Deputy General Manager (DGM) Shah Mohammad Khaled Newaz said today that work is underway to rescue the sunken ferry and vehicles and search for the missing engine master.

On inquiry, it is known that utility (small) ferry Rajnigandha left from Daulatdia end of Rajbari for Paturia after 12 o’clock last Tuesday night. There were 9 freight vehicles on the ferry. The ferry got stuck in the Padma river near ghat number 5 of Paturia due to thick fog around 1.30 am. The ferry started sinking at around 8am the next morning. Rescue team members rescued 20 people. However, Humayun Kabir went missing in this incident.

BIWTC’s Aricha office sources said that a cargo truck and a covered van were recovered by rescue ships Hamza and Rustom on Wednesday afternoon and another truck on Thursday. Then a truck was recovered today.

Last Friday afternoon, the rescue ship ‘Pratya’ was brought from Narayanganj to rescue the ferry Rajnigandha. Since then, BIWTA and Navy divers have attempted to lighten the ferry by inflating air lifting bags under the ferry and attempting to tie strong ropes to the bottom of the ferry. However, due to the current in the river and winter, this work did not succeed. Even today efforts are being made to lighten the ferry by injecting air into air lifting bags to save the ferry.

The authorities plan to bring in modern technology ship ‘Jhenai-1’. However, the ship from Narayanganj did not reach Paturia till noon today.
