Awami League will not give party nominations in local government elections including the upcoming Upazila Parishad elections. That is, no boat symbol will be allotted to anyone. The leaders of the party can choose as they like. Party leaders can vote for any candidate.
This decision was taken in an emergency meeting of the central executive of Awami League held on Monday evening. Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina presided over this meeting held at Ganobhaban. Several sources present at the meeting confirmed this information.
The Election Commission has already informed about the Upazila Parishad elections in the country in March. Apart from this today, Election Commissioner Anisur Rahman informed the journalists that on March 9 Mymensingh City Corporation Election and Comilla City Corporation Mayoral By-election will be held. Elections will be held in several municipalities on the same day. The schedule will be officially announced later.
Within the local government, there is a provision of party symbol voting for the posts of chairman and mayor in Union Parishad, Upazila, Municipality and City Corporation.
Awami League’s executive committee meeting sources said that almost all the leaders of the central committee spoke in favor of not allocating party symbols in local government elections including upazila parishads. The gist of their speech is that a few days ago, due to party and independent candidates in the national parliament elections, there was a division in the grassroots. Now in local government elections, if one person is allotted a party symbol, others will vote independently. This will increase the differences. Rather, it would be better to open it up.
Then party president Sheikh Hasina supported everyone’s opinion. He said, for the time being, no party will be nominated in the local government elections. It will make voting festive and participatory. The popular candidate will win. He said that the party’s nomination board will be informed about the matter.
The central leaders of Awami League expressed the opinion that if the election is held without the party symbol, the voter turnout will increase. At that time, the party chief Sheikh Hasina pointed to the western countries and said that the ‘mothers’ are all about voter attendance. If the elections are open, the voters will increase. In the 12th National Parliament elections, which were held by excluding the opposition parties including BNP, the Awami League gave the party candidates as well as the party leaders-supporters the opportunity to be independent candidates. 58 party leader-supporters were elected as independent candidates. Awami League leaders said that the idea of keeping the upazila elections open for all came from this. The leaders say that if the BNP comes to the polls later, understanding the situation, there can be a discussion on whether or not to give symbols in local government elections.
According to the sources of the meeting, the issue of post-voting conflict between the party nominee and independent candidate’s workers-supporters in the parliamentary elections came up for discussion. Some suggested bridging the divide by holding an extended meeting. However, party chief Sheikh Hasina said not to hold extended meetings amid disputes among themselves. Rather, he ordered the organizational responsible leaders of the party to be proactive in reducing differences. He said to hold an extended meeting later.
According to the sources of the meeting, the issue of BNP’s election boycott was also discussed. At that time, Awami League president said, ‘BNP has tried everything to prevent the election. The bank called for a non-cooperation movement, including a shutdown of court proceedings. Some wanted to dress up as Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. But the people of the country rejected them.
Regarding the upazila elections, Sheikh Hasina said, “BNP will hold elections if it wants.” If you don’t come, you don’t. Sadhasadhi will not be done.
Sources also said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also spoke about the comments of the twelfth national parliament elections of the countries of the western world including the United States of America. He said there was controversy over the election of George W. Bush and Al Gore. Donald Trump has not yet accepted Joe Biden’s victory. This situation in their country! Everyone should ask that question how they preached again in Bangladesh.
