To embezzle a large amount of money, the university student Hasibur Rahman alias Himel was set up to kidnap their driver Chamidul Islam and others. Last Tuesday night, RAB arrested the kidnappers and rescued Hasibur Rahman from Tahirpur in Sunamganj based on their information. A foreign pistol, two wakitkis and two bullets were seized from them. RAB said, during preliminary interrogation, the arrested persons admitted their involvement in the abduction.

The 5 kidnappers arrested by RAB are the main planner Abdul Malek (35), planner Chamidul Islam (30) and their accomplices Roni Nabal (41), Russell Mia (34) and Billal Hossain (24).

Hasibur, a university student, went missing from Dhaka’s Uttara to Sherpur at around 9:30 in the morning on December 26. The kidnappers later demanded a ransom from his mother. RAB rescued Hasibur from Taherpur in Sunamganj last Tuesday night in that incident. RAB and police arrested a total of nine people involved in the kidnapping.

RAB gave this information at a press conference organized at RAB’s media center in the capital’s Karwan Bazar on Thursday afternoon. Commander Khandaker Al Moin, Director of Law and Media Branch of RAB, said that Hasibur’s father used to manage the business of selling batteries. Hasibur studied in the fourth year of mechanical engineering department at a private university in Uttara, capital. His father died four months ago. After that, Hasibur managed his father’s business besides studying at the university.

As Chamidul worked as a driver at Hasibur’s house for four years, he developed a good relationship with the family and Chamidul knew various information related to their family’s finances and property. On December 16, Chamidul and his close friend Malek led a meeting with others at a place in Uttara. There it was decided that Malek and Chamidul would kidnap Hasibur and collect a large ransom from his family. The matter was communicated to their other associates. As part of the plan, Chamidul told Hasibur about the possibility of selling batteries to various companies in Sherpur and made him interested in going to Sherpur.

RAB Commander Khandaker Al Moin said that Chamidul contacted Malek after driving a car to take Hasibur to Sherpur at around 9:30 am on December 26. According to the plan, Malek and other associates started following Hasibur’s car in three-four motorcycles. When they reached Salna area of Gazipur, they stopped Hasibur’s car with a motorcycle. At this time, they put Hasibur and Chamidul behind the car. Chamidul and Malek’s associate Roni sat in the driver’s seat and Russell drove the car. Malek and others followed the car on motorcycles. In the evening, they reached Dhobaura, a border area of Mymensingh. Russell and Billal took the car to Dhobaura and returned to Gazipur. They left the car in Basan area of Gazipur and Billal went back to Mymensingh. Later Russell would follow Hasibur’s mother’s movements in Uttara. After staying in Dhobaura for three days, except Billal, Malek, Chamidul and others of the kidnapping gang took Hasibur to the border area of Tahirpur in Sunamganj. Roni knows the various areas and roads bordering Tahirpur very well. They moved to the hilly area bordering Hasibur and stayed there. During this time they brutally tortured Hasibur and recorded his video.

RAB official Khandaker Al Moin said that when the family members called Hasibur’s personal mobile number, it was switched off. After not being able to contact her son for a long time, Hasibur’s mother filed a general diary (GD) at the capital’s Uttara Paschim police station. Two days later, on December 28, Hasibur’s car was recovered by law enforcement agencies in an abandoned state in Gazipur’s Basan area. Later, an unidentified person called Hasibur’s mother’s WhatsApp and said that Hasibur had been kidnapped and demanded a ransom of Rs 2 crore. A video of Hasibur being brutally tortured was sent to his family. In this situation, on January 6, Hasibur’s mother filed a case of abduction at the capital’s Uttara Paschim police station. Hasibur’s mother also filed a written complaint with RAB to rescue her son. Then RAB increased intelligence surveillance.

Khandaker Al Moin said, they demanded one and a half crores, then 30 lakhs as ransom. He threatened to cut off Hasibur’s hands and feet and kill him if he did not get the ransom money. Malek repeatedly abused Hasibur’s mother over the phone and threatened to kill her family members. Later, Hasibur’s mother agreed to pay the ransom money to the kidnappers.
