Asif Mahtab, a part-time teacher of BRAC University, tore up his class 7 textbooks, BRAC University has termed it as ‘devastating’. They think this is ‘uncoaching behaviour’. Because of this, the university has decided not to renew the contract with Asif Mahtab.
This was said in a statement of BRAC University on Monday.
In light of the new curriculum, a chapter in the seventh grade history and social science textbook includes a public awareness lesson on the transgender community. There is a debate about this. The matter came to the fore after a former part-time teacher of BRAC University tore the pages of the book at an event. The video of the incident went viral on social media.
BRAC University said in a statement that Asif Mahtab worked as a part-time teacher at BRAC University. Currently there is no contract with BRAC University.
BRAC University has issued a new statement today regarding the incident in the midst of discussion. Like all higher education institutions, BRAC University believes in constructive discussion, debate and mutual exchange based on tolerance and respect for all opinions and ideologies, the statement said. But the destruction of national resources through destructive activities is totally unacceptable behavior, which BRAC University does not support. BRAC University considers the recent incident of Asif Mahtab tearing the pages of the 7th standard textbook published by the Government of Bangladesh and asking others to do the same in a public forum to be a subversive act. They do not condone such uneducated behavior in any way.
Because of this, Back University has decided not to give a new contract to Asif Mahtab as a part-time teacher for the ‘Spring Semester’ of 2024. However, the University will remunerate Asif Mahtab for his time and effort in preparation for this semester.
The statement also said that BRAC University respects the constitution and laws of the country in all respects and is committed to complying with the prevailing regulations of the country. So BRAC University is associated with the promotion and spread of homosexuality—such allegations in some quarters on social media are completely baseless. However, BRAC University believes in creating equal opportunities for every human being to develop their equal rights and potential.
