Russian Ambassador to Dhaka Alexander Mantitsky termed BNP’s statement about Russia’s role in the 12th National Assembly elections as ‘misleading, false’. He urged not to believe such statements.

The Russian ambassador made this comment after a meeting with Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud at his office on Wednesday afternoon.

The current ruling Awami League has been able to form the government because of Russia, China and India – when asked about such allegations of BNP, the Russian ambassador said that the people of Bangladesh elected their government in the elections. Alexander Mantitsky said, ‘As far as I understand, your people have decided in this election. What is Russia doing here? We do not interfere in the political affairs of any country, especially a friendly country like Bangladesh. These (interventions) are misleading information or false information. Don’t believe them.’

In response to the question whether he sees such comments of BNP as a political statement to mislead people, the ambassador said, ‘You have to ask them, not me.’

In a party program last Saturday, BNP Standing Committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy said, India, China and Russia – their government is Hasina’s government; It is not the government of the people of Bangladesh.

In response to a question, the ambassador said that Russia does not accept any unilateral sanctions from the United States or Western countries. Of course it (ban) is a problem. As a result, not only Bangladesh or Russia, many western countries are also in trouble.

Stating that the meeting was fruitful, the ambassador said that politics, economy, technology and science were discussed in the meeting. Last year, the trade between the two countries reached 230 billion dollars. He said, “We have discussed the continuation of cooperation in three areas. Russia is interested in buying not only clothes but also jute and leather goods from Bangladesh.

The ambassador said that currently Bangladesh is emphasizing on energy and food security. In terms of energy, the work of Rooppur nuclear power plant is being completed on schedule. Apart from this, Gazprom has discovered gas reserves by exploring for gas last year. Russia hopes that such cooperation with Bangladesh will continue. Russia is ready to supply LNG, oil and oil products to Bangladesh.

On food safety, the Russian ambassador said that the issue of food safety is important for Bangladesh. Last year, Russia gave Bangladesh 26 lakh 70 thousand tons of wheat. Apart from this, Russia is supplying 300,000 tons of wheat this January. Apart from this, other cooperation also continues between the two countries.

When asked about the progress of discussions on trade in own currency, Alexander Mantitsky said that discussions are ongoing.
