Telipara village of Udhunia union of Ullapara upazila of Sirajganj. About 18 km west of upazila headquarters. When I reached Ramkomal Bhowmik’s house in this village, it was around two o’clock in the afternoon. After entering the house through the front door, Pramila Rani (55) was seen sitting on the balcony floor and lamenting. It is the home of his younger sister Meena Rani. Ramkomal is the husband of Meena Rani.
The accused, Rajeev Kumar Bhowmik (35), who confessed to killing three members of the same family in Tarasha, Sirajganj, is Pramila Rani’s son. Murder victim Bikash Sarkar (45) is younger brother of Pramila. After his arrest, Rajiv told the police interrogation that on January 22, his uncle Vikas pressured him to return the money due from the joint business with him within seven-eight days and called his mother (Pramila Rani) on her mobile phone for the money. Failing to raise money and frustrated by the nagging, Rajeev plans to kill his uncle and his entire family.
Pramila Rani’s house is in Telipara village of Ullapara. After his son was arrested, he left his house and stayed at his sister Meena Rani’s house in the same village for the last two days. Last Wednesday night, Pramila Rani also participated in the last rites of brother Vikas Sarkar (45), brother’s wife Swarna Rani Sarkar (40) and their only daughter Parmita Sarkar (15) at the Anirban crematorium in Chala Magura village of Tarash Sadar.
Pramila Rani’s husband Vishwanath Bhowmik died in 2021. He was a primary school teacher. She lost her husband and was living with her only son Rajeev. That boy’s younger brother was killed along with his family, the boy is now in the hands of the law. How could he survive alone, he was lamenting and saying. He said, ‘Our younger brother Bikash Sarkar used to rush to everyone’s needs. After Rajeev’s father died, brother gave money to my son to start business. And Rajiv’s father left seven bighas of land and pension money to spend our days.
Rajeev’s mother said that in the beginning of 2020, Rajeev got a job in a non-governmental organization (NGO). That was not the case during the Corona Pandemic before the training started. Later, Rajeev started a joint business with younger uncle Bikash Sarkar. A few days ago, Rajiv started digging a pond in a land of 8-10 bighas in this village. But a lot of money gets stuck here due to various complications. Apart from this it gives some loss in business. As a result, trouble started with uncle Bikash Sarkar over money.
Pramila Rani said, “During her father’s illness, a lot of money was spent. A few years ago, the house was renovated. The son is of marriageable age. The girl was showing. But what did he do? I did not hear that there was any problem with anyone in the village. But a family including his own uncle was wiped out by his son.
Pramila Rani, when asked whether brother Vikas Sarkar had called him before the murder, said, “There was a dispute between Rajeev and his uncle over business money for some time.” For this, my brother asked me too. However, Galmand did not. If you are rude, you can kill Rajeev. But for this, I cannot even think that my son will do such a brutal incident.
The sister-in-law of the deceased Bikash Sarkar Ramkomal Bhowmik (Rajeev Meso) said, “I don’t understand how the boy did such a thing.”
Rajeev’s pistuto (phupato) brother Telipara Madhyamik Vidyaniketan assistant teacher Ratan Kumar said Rajeev studied up to class five in his father’s school, Fazilnagar Government Primary School. Later Pratap passed SSC exam from Mohiuddin High School. After passing HSC, he passed graduation (honours) and post graduation from Sirajganj Government College.
Ratan Kumar’s wife (Rajiv’s daughter-in-law) Shapla Rani Pramanik said, “Rajiv and his mother were at our house last Saturday and Monday for the wedding of my cousin’s daughter. But I did not notice any other feeling in him.
On condition of anonymity, two residents of Telipara village said that they have known Rajeev since childhood. But for some time Rajiv changed a bit. Apart from business, they heard that they were involved in various types of games (online gambling) on mobile phones.
Abdullah Al Mahmud, assistant principal of Pratap Mohiuddin High School, said, “It is shocking to think that one of our students is involved in such a brutal incident.”
Bikash Sarkar, his wife Swarna Rani Sarkar and their only daughter Parmita Sarkar alias Tushi, a class 10 student of Tarash Government Girls High School, were recovered by breaking the lock of the third floor flat of a three-storey building in Barwari Battala Mohalla of Tarash Upazila Sadar last Monday. The deceased Bikash Sarkar’s elder brother Prakash Sarkar (70) is the Vice President of Tarash Upazila Awami League. The three-storied building houses the family of two brothers and their tenants.
