Myanmar’s junta forces have lost control of several more bases to the People’s Defense Forces (PDF) and ethnic armed groups (FAO) rebels over the past three days. At the same time 62 of their soldiers were killed. The insurgents continued to target the junta in various areas across the country.
Irrawaddy, known as media critical of Myanmar’s junta, reported casualties and base capture in Sagaing, Magwi and Mandalay regions and Kachin and Karen provinces. However, military casualties could not be objectively verified.
Junta forces failed to retake Sagaing town from PDF control. PDF is the military wing of the Government of National Unity (NUG), supported by opposition political parties including Aung San Suu Kyi.
PDF’s Homalin Group said the military announced the abandonment of its operation last Saturday after 10 days of efforts in the Shui Pai Ai area of Homalin town in Sagaing region. For 10 days they tried to recapture the town of Sagaing from the PDF. But they had to retreat in the face of resistance from the rebels.
PDF forces captured the city on November 22 last year. About 400 members of the military junta and their ally the Shani Nationals Army (SNA) launched an operation to retake the town.
PDF recovered 15 dead bodies from where the jantas were, after they left. Another 40 members of the junta were injured during the clashes. Junta bombed, looted Magwi village.
Yasagayo PDF said the PDF drone attacked a unit of about 100 members of the Junta’s Light Infantry Battalion-258 forces on Saturday. Junta members later ransacked Kyauk Hli B area of Yasagayo town in Magwi region.
According to PDF, two members of the military were killed and six others were injured in the drone attack in the area.
The PDF said they carried out a drone strike in the pro-junta village of Ji Ta. The region is occupied by the pro-junta Pue Sau Hliti guerrillas. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
On Saturday, the Maingian Black Tiger PDF and another rebel group attacked members of the junta forces in the town of Yasagayo, using grenades and 40-mm explosives. At least two people were injured.
Ambush in Mandalay
Myingian Black Tiger PDF said they and Mandalay District PDF Battalion-3 ambushed an army truck in Natogai town on Saturday using 10 landmines.
The army truck was going to Natogai town from Myngyan town. After the surprise attack, the truck stopped and the soldiers opened fire from there. Later it returned to the city of Myingian. Two army personnel were killed in a landmine blast.
16 soldiers killed in Mandalay
At least 16 members of the junta forces were killed in a joint rebel attack on an army base in San Pia village near Myingyan town in Mandalay region on Friday, Natogai District PDF said. There were 20 soldiers in the base. At this time, several weapons were seized from the junta.
A member of the Maingian Black Tiger PDF was also killed in the clash.
Another stronghold occupied by the Kachins
According to a local Kachin media report, rebels of the influential Kachin Independence Army (KIA) have captured another base of the junta in Nant Thein area of Pakant city in Kachin province.
The KIA rebels had surrounded the base for quite some time. The bodies of eight soldiers were found at the base after the insurgents attacked on Sunday.
The base in Nant Thein area was strategically important for the army. The KIA’s capture of the base further consolidated rebel control in the area.
Earlier, on January 6, KIA rebels had similarly raided Nant Thein and Wai Khar areas of Pakant town. On January 20, they captured a base on the hill and a police station in Wai Khar area.
On Friday, the insurgents captured another strategically important base in the town of Mansi in Kachin province.
Capture of junta base in Karen
According to the NUG, PDF and Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) rebels attacked an army base in Thandaongi town of Karen province on Sunday. At least 20 members of the junta were killed. After three days of fighting, the KNLA and PDF, the military wing of the Karen National Union, captured the key base in the Mine Luin area.
The rebels recovered a large amount of ammunition and food from the base.
