The fighting Arakan Army (AA) has reported taking control of two more junta bases in the towns of Mrauk U and Kyauktao in Myanmar’s Rakhine state. The armed insurgent group said that they are fighting heavily with the army in some other areas of the state.
The Arakan Army said, after several days of fighting, they captured the headquarters of a battalion of the Junta’s infantry (Light Infantry Battalion-LIB 378) in the town of Mrauk U on Monday morning. Before this, the headquarters of the nearby LIB 540 battalion was occupied on Tuesday. Apart from this, the base of LIB 377 in the city is being attacked.
According to information provided by the Arakan Army, shelling was being carried out from the base of three battalions of the LIB 378, 540 and 377 infantry in various residential areas of Mrauk U town and surrounding villages.
Earlier on February 2, the Arakan Army captured the base of the junta’s battalion LIB 376 in Kyauktao town. In addition, the Myanmar military forces are heavily bombarding the cities of Rathedong, Ponagyun, Ramri and An in Rakhine. They are fighting with rebel fighters there.
The Arakan Army is attacking various checkpoints of the military in Mangdu town of Rakhine on the Bangladesh border. As a result of this, more than two hundred people, including Myanmar border guards and army personnel, have fled and taken refuge in Bangladesh since last Sunday. Bangladesh border guard force BGB said that yesterday about 100 border guards of Myanmar fled to Bangladesh. Bangladesh police said that yesterday a Bangladeshi and a Rohingya were killed by a mortar shell fired from Myanmar. The Arakan Army blamed the junta forces for this incident.
Since November 13, the Arakan Army has been attacking the junta forces in the northern part of Rakhine and in Paletwa town of the neighboring Chin state. The group said they have captured about 170 positions of the Junta forces in these areas.
