The full results of the Pakistan General Assembly elections are yet to be released. But it is almost certain that no party will get the necessary seats to form the government alone. In this situation, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) have reached a consensus to form a coalition government.
PML-N is the party of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari is the head of PPP. He is the son of former President Asif Ali Zardari and former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutta.
In this election in Pakistan, there was a tight fight between the party of former Prime Minister and imprisoned Imran Khan, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and PML-N. However, PTI could not contest as a party due to legal hurdles. The candidates supported by this party participated in the elections as independents. However, PTI and PML-N both claimed to be the winners. In this situation, Nawaz Sharif has started the struggle to come to power by forming an alliance.
PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif held a meeting with PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and his father Asif Ali Zardari, former President of Pakistan. At this time, Shahbaz Sharif urged the top leaders of PPP to ‘work together for Pakistan’.
The meeting was held at the home of Punjab caretaker government chief Mohsin Naqvi. Quoting a source related to the meeting, Geo News reported that Shahbaz Sharif had a meeting with Bilawal and Asif Zardari to form a government in the center and Punjab.
Sources also said that Shahbaz conveyed the message of Nawaz Sharif to the top leaders of PPP in the meeting which lasted for 45 minutes. He also called for a meeting between the leaders of PPP and PML-N for the political and economic stability of Pakistan in the future.
Shahbaz and Zardari have also agreed that the leaders of the two parties will hold talks immediately to decide the strategy to come to power by forming an alliance at the Center and Punjab.
266 seats in the National Assembly of Pakistan are directly polled. Voting in one seat was earlier postponed after a candidate was shot dead by miscreants ahead of the polls. As a result, voting was done in 265 seats. A party needs to win 134 seats to form a single government.
According to the latest results of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), independent candidates have won a maximum of 99 out of 250 seats till 6 am on Saturday morning. Most of them contested elections with the support of PTI. Then PML-N won 71 seats, PPP 53 and MQM 17. Other parties got 10 seats.
Earlier in 2022, PPP and PML-N formed an alliance to remove then Prime Minister Imran Khan from power through a vote of no confidence in Parliament.
