At a seminar of the Department of Environment in Cox’s Bazar, the representatives of the civil society have put forward a recommendation to the interim government to decide on the prohibition of overnight stay of tourists in St. Martin, an atoll island known for its biodiversity. At the same time, he said to evict the illegal structures including hotels and motels built there.
Abdul Hamid, chief guest of the seminar and Director General of the Department of Environment assured to review the recommendations and take a decision. He said that the government will determine how many tourists can visit the island through the online registration process.

Fazlul Quader Chowdhury said, ‘Virtually nothing is being done to protect the environment of St. Martin. On the contrary, hotels and resorts are being built illegally all over the island. More than two hundred hotels and cottages have been built on the island without environmental clearance. Evacuation of these illegal structures is necessary. Besides, limiting the travel of tourists there will have a negative impact on the tourism industry. Stop tourist overnight stays in St. Martin without restricting tourists.’
